The Pinky Tales: Unforseen Benefits

voncookie | July 31, 2008

I’ve been reading my ass off the last few days, and it’s been truly wonderful.  Dirty secret: I haven’t been able to read *effectively* for over 3 years now. When I took my Qualifying Exams in 2005, I did nothing but read for about 6 months.  But even by then my ability to concentrate was [...]

Illicit Computer Rendez-Vous in the Local Public Library

voncookie | July 29, 2008

It got to be unbearable, the need to check my email, so I came here to the LPLibrary and reserved a computer so I could get business done.  As it turns out, the world doesn’t miss me all that much.  The Computer Fast is otherwise going very well.  I’ve already finished two books and started [...]

Computer Fast

voncookie | July 25, 2008

I’m going to be taking a short break–three to five days–from my computer(s). I’m planning on using the next few days of my “computer fast” for major reading and longhand note-taking. I’ll be back with some observations about my computer fast next week. see you then!

But Does Your President Know?

The world of lesbian and bisexual poets rejoices! Kay Ryan—a contemporary poet with whom I am only vaguely familiar, to be honest—has been appointed the U.S. Poet Laureate. (For a clip of her reading her poem “Home to Roost”, click here. I’m not one to essentialize sexuality or anything, but having an openly gay Poet [...]

Reviving InaDWriMo

voncookie | July 23, 2008

Seen previously on Fumbling Towards Geekdom: A month dedicated to meeting the goal of a certain word count on the dissertation. Usually, it’s set for October. But, for purposes of practicality—October being somewhat far away still, and the need being immediate—I’m reviving InaDWriMo for the month of August. The goal? I still need to think [...]

The Pinky Tales: Update, Day 17 of Pinky Woe

voncookie | July 22, 2008

so, went to the dr’s office today and they did a repeat x-ray. it looks like the bone (which they had to reset last week) is in a good position and needed no adjustment. next week they will put me in a new cast very carefully, and I’ll be in that new cast for another [...]

Meine Untergang (My Downfall)

voncookie | July 20, 2008

My Spanish accent is horrible. How do I know this? Well first of all, I can’t roll my r’s. Okay that’s not exactly true: I can roll my r’s about 75% of the time. The other 25% of the time I make a gurgling sound or a hissy noise or a vague, quasi-consonantal noise that [...]

the dragon… it comes to kick ass

voncookie | July 18, 2008

Welcome to the world of Dragon 9.5!  I am actually dictating this entry, albeit not directly, into WordPress so that I can get back to my regular blogging schedule.  This is so much easier than trying to type with eight or nine fingers. So let’s see, what’s been going on?  (Wow this is great!  I [...]

my misshapen claw

voncookie | July 16, 2008

ok, so went to see the doc today for the follow-up with the casty/splinty thing. net result after one week in splint: fracture is more pronounced. now you can really see it on the x-rays. it’s not spiral as i thought, but it was causing my finger to turn inward when the dr. cautiously bent [...]

voncookie | July 14, 2008

too… moody… too… grumpy… must… write… something. screw Dragon. I’m going ahead with Ch1… and everything else I have to do.

voncookie | July 13, 2008

several people now have suggested to me that i invest in voice recognition software, the best-known of which is “Dragon Naturally Speaking 9″. i’m inclined to agree that i need some sort of assistance, as i cannot even wash my own dishes… let’s have a grand shout-out to wicked stepmother who’s coming over to help [...]

the downward spiral

voncookie | July 9, 2008

they finally found the fx, and it wasn’t in the 5th metacarpal as was thought. it’s in the proximal phalanx of my 5th finger. the first bone of my pinky finger, just above the knuckle. it’s a spiral fracture, which could require surgery if it splinters, for lack of the correct terminology. no cast, though, [...]

when is a fracture not a fracture?

voncookie | July 8, 2008

… when you’re seen at the student health clinic. Got a call this morning… “Hi, vonCookie! How’s your hand? Ummm… yeah… as it turns out… they ruled that there is a fracture in your hand after all. You’ll have to come back in to get a referral to an ortho clinic so that they can [...]
