hmm lots to ponder. 1. karma pays forth. 2. good-for-students being canceled out argument perhaps falters in a time of crises? right? as in otherwise, without your generosity/magnanimous self-sacrifice etc., many..lets say 5 of them, might have difficulty finishing the major/graduating, right?
and 3. though i'm not 100% comfortable about the taking in more students for the same amount of pay issue and agree grosso modo with what you/knitters brought up, i also think that in a time of crisis(am i being too dramatic? perhaps an alternative: in a time recuperating/still reeling from crisis...) a certain amount of team-playing is expected. (not that you haven't done this a million times over already, but you know...). i know in my department above you the instructors' were resistant (for legitimate reasons) of raising the # of students accepted in each class and voiced their concerns. what happened? they went to bed one day with the regular cap and woke up the next morning /many found out by the 5 new faces in their class that the class limit has been raised overnight. I know for the course I'm teaching (writing intensive to the max) we have 11 extra bodies in the class. Because they are majors and cannot graduate without the class. So I agree, it puts the students in a not as great situation, but if all professors etc., refused to raise the limits, i think it would cause more problems long term. Perhaps it's better just to have a semester or two of fuller than ideal courses and hopefully things will settle if the economy gets better/ppl will find new administrative ways to deal with the situation.
I think had you said I just can't do that....it might not have gone over so well. though i fully agree/believe it is NOT as good for the students. but i think also the students, given that they have had so much trouble getting in many of their classes, understand why these days...this semester at least, the classes are a bit packed..

lost track of numbers. you know how you have your 7/8-5...or plus nighttime work time plan? i think you just need to make sure that each day you set aside...hmmm 1? 2? 1.5 hours for research, and more on the weekends. like maybe it will be best for you to plan the classes at school adn then you come home, can have your relax time and then research...or perhaps you prefer to do research at school and lesson plan at home. but at least a bit a day, then you're making continual progress! that's what french overlord does, and he's been able to publish a ton.

but....i feel ya vc

I loved this post, probably because it's what I want to aspire to. This summer I decided to stop being lazy and begin to study for the GRE so I can get my masters in English. What I'm hoping is that the masters will push me into a PhD because I will love it so much I can't stop. I've felt an incredibly big academic void since I left university and I need to satisfy it. I only graduated with my BA 3.5 years ago so I'm still pretty young but I have a weird question to ask you. How old are you? How long did it take you to get the PhD? I'm not afraid of the masters whatsoever./ The PhD on the other hand terrifies me!

Tal - I love it. I actually found your blog because I did a search of "south jersey pronounce towel crayon water". My dear departed father was from the Jersey Shore, and we used to tease him for saying Tal, Cran and Wudder. Your spellings are a bit different but same idea. You forgot to mention going to the store and gedding a gallon of melk.
